Mark chapter 16 begins with the scene in which, very early on the first day of the week, the women went to the tomb of Jesus. They had prepared spices, but they were anxious about who would roll away the great stone that blocked the tomb. Yet before they arrived, the stone had already been rolled away, and the tomb was empty. The young man clothed in white proclaimed, “He is risen! He is not here.” The resurrection is not a story that came out of the expectation or the imagination of the disciples, but an actual event that God accomplished.
